Stake-pocket work car...

...12-passenger riding car

When we were building the CD&M, the entire rolling stock consisted of a two-truck rail-buggy pulled by our Holder tractor on speeder wheels. But as the railroad progressed, it was soon apparent that a flat-bed work car was required. And once we had enough track to have friends and family (and us!) ride on and enjoy, it was apparent that noisy cab-rides or sitting Indian-style on the flat-bed weren't cutting it.

This flat-bed work car is made from two trucks of Charlie's design and manufacture. Braking power is currently provided only by the locomotive. This will be changed in the coming months to have a mechanical or possibly pneumatic brake system. With the stake pockets fitted for 2x2 stakes nailed to 2x12 sideboards, the car can easily hold two yards of dirt or ballast. Now, if it just had a dump mechanism! (Charlie's work never ends...)

And on the right, voila!, you have the transformed work car as a stately, 12-passenger riding car. And as Marie dutifully recorded with stop watch, pencil and paper, it only requires:

  • 5-1/2 hours of Charlie's time,
  • 48 pieces and parts and,
  • 84 bolts, washers and nuts

Hopefully, in the next year or so, this page will showcase our crane car, our soon-to-be caboose, and soon-to-be tender for the Porter locomotive. Stay tuned!
